In 2021, numerous webtoons had been announced to be adapted into dramas, some aired while some have yet to release their production schedule. The popular historical romance webtoon “Gorae Byul - The Gyeongseong Mermaid” also known as “The Whale Star” (in Korean “고래별”) by Na YoonHee was announced to be adapted into a drama. This webtoon is a reinterpretation of “The Little Mermaid” (by Andersen) with Korean sensibility. The webtoon started back in 2019 and is now completed with 105 episodes. It constantly received a high score of 9.9/10 on the Naver webtoon platform in the romance category. “Gorae Byul - The Gyeongseong Mermaid” is set in the independent movements during the Japanese colonial era. The lead character SuA is a servant in a pro-Japanese household. At the beach, she met EuiHyeon who had jumped into the sea after being shot by the Japanese police. For those of you who would like to read the webtoon, you can find it here in Korean. There is no official English translation.

TAKEONE Studio (game “BTS World”, drama “L.U.C.A: The Beginning”, other webtoon adaptation for “CELL”, etc) is in charge of the adaptation (as announced on July 9). But no more information was released yet, and there is no actor cast for now.  Fans of the webtoon are waiting for the announcement of the cast. We can already think of actors and actresses who would be perfect for the role! 1. Heo SuA - the mermaid

SuA (17 years old) is a servant of the Yeo family, a pro-Japanese household. She was born in a poor family and was sold to them at 5 years old. She is illiterate but clever and strong-minded. One day at the beach, she saved Kang EuiHyeon an independence activist shot by the Japanese. After he regained consciousness, he told her the story of “The Little Mermaid”, the princess who saved the prince, without mentioning the end. SuA fell in love with Kang EuiHyeon and wanted to meet him again. Due to various events, she ended up going to Gyeongseong (now Seoul). Kim SoHyun, Kim HyangGi, Kim TaeRi, and Chae SooBin could be a good match.  

2. Kang EuiHyeon - the prince

Kang EuiHyeon (21 years old) is an independence activist (Korean independence movement). He was born into a wealthy family and went to study in Japan. He felt despair at the fact that he could do nothing after seeing the Ethnic Koreans massacred after the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake. After returning to Korea, he joined the independence movement. He looks soft on the outside but he is strong-minded. Lee JongSuk, Yoo SeungHo, Lee DoHyun, and GOT7’s JinYoung could be a good match.  

3. Song HaeSoo - the witch

Song HaeSoo (22 years old) is a lead character. His character gained importance in the second half of the webtoon. The independence activist and comrade of Kang EuiHyeon is the main reason why SuA can’t speak. He is cold but warm to the person he loves. Song HaeSoo lost his family due to Japan and can speak four languages: Korean, Japanese, English, and Russian. Woo DoHwan, Lee JaeWook, Na InWoo, and JinYoung could be a good match and suit the character’s long hairstyle.  

4. Han YeonKyung

Han YeonKyung (27 years old) is an independence activist with Song HaeSoo. Her wealthy family uses a lot of her money for the independence movement. Her husband, a long-time supporter of the Korean Provisional Government, had been ill since marriage. He was tortured by the Japanese colonial rule and was never able to see his son. Shin HyeSun, Im SeMi, Jung InSun, and Jung EunChae could be a good match.  

5. Han InSung

Han InSung is Han YeonKyung’s younger brother. He is an independence activist. But for him, his sister and nephew are more important than the country. ATEEZ’s YunHo, Shin JaeHa, Song GeonHee, and Park SangNam could be a good match.  

6. Lee Gun

Lee Gun (17 years old) is a male student who helps SuA and has a crush on Han YeonKyung. Nam DaReum, Choi HyunWook, Kim MinGi, and SF9’s Chani could be a good match.  

7. Yeo YunHwa

SuA is working for Yeo YunHwa’s family, a pro-Japanese wealthy household. Yeo YunHwa is 18 years old and is beautiful. Since she was young, she has grown up with SuA. Even if she is harsh to her, she has affection for her. Woo DaVi, Hwang BoReumByeol, Han SungMin, and DIA’s Jung ChaeYeon could be a good match.   Note: The aim of the vote is for Kpopmap readers to share their opinion about their preference for the cast.
