You can click here to find all our Romantic Picks, in one place! This week’s Romantic Pick comes from the musical K-Drama of our dreams, “The Sound Of Magic”. Starring Ji ChangWook, Choi SungEun, and Hwang InYoup in the leading roles, this drama tells the story of a mysterious magician living in an abandoned theme park who appears in the life of a disenchanted young girl just when she needs him the most. With music, magic, and lots of love, we’re taken on a mesmerizing journey that teaches us to believe in the power we hold within.
In episode 2, titled “Don’t let me dream any longer”, we see Na IlDeung (played by Hwang InYoup), taking baby steps of affection towards Yun AhYi (played by Choi SungEun). IlDeung doesn’t quite notice AhYi until they’re placed in the same class, and he hears of her excellence in mathematics: the only subject IlDeung isn’t the top student in. However, what intrigues him isn’t her academic prowess. There’s something about AhYi that draws him in, especially when she tells him that she only enjoys mathematics because it posits problems that inevitably have solutions, unlike life. Being deskmates, IlDeung cannot help but be aware of AhYi’s financial difficulties. Having spotted his discarded book in her possession, IlDeung inadvertently becomes privy to her need for resources, which prompts him to offer her help with the same, although in a seemingly nonchalant way. He loads up the table with study materials before casually asking whether she needs anything. When AhYi responds with a sheepish ’no’, he pushes them towards her ever so subtly to subliminally communicate that she can ask for them if she wants to. It works. AhYi musters up the courage to ask IlDeung whether it would be alright for her to borrow any one of the books he wasn’t going to use that day. IlDeung initially shuts her down, saying that he was most definitely going to study from all of them before proposing that she should come along with him to the library and then borrow it there while they study together. Also works. AhYi agrees and the two head out for the library after class. Time goes by as AhYi studies diligently and IlDeung struggles to hold his heart still. Before he knows it, AhYi has completed taking notes and is about to leave. To spend more time with her, IlDeung suggests she take a look at even more books and even hands her the expected questions! AhYi perks up, half-sorry and half-grateful for his kindness, and immediately gets to work. IlDeung, on the other hand, is just happy to be around her. With his heart beating out of his chest, he can hardly maintain the indifferent show. Unable to focus, he resorts to music, sharing his Airpods with AhYi.
As the acoustic guitar chimes in, surely enough, the world around them disappears and they’re transported to a field of yellow flowers where IlDeung serenades a bashful AhYi. The show thus reiterates the interchangeability of music and magic as IlDeung is carried away into a vivid world of infatuation with a song. The scene that follows is arguably one of the simplest yet the most visually appealing scene in the entire series, which speaks volumes of its brilliance. After all, there is nothing more magical than falling in love. You can watch the full scene below!
